Snapchat announces The Snappys, its groundbreaking first-ever creator awards show scheduled for March 21. This prestigious event aims to honor the influential creators actively shaping culture across the Snapchat platform.
The Snappys will bestow awards such as “Spotlight MVP,” “Best Storyteller,” and “Breakout Creator of the Year.” Recognition extends across diverse categories including fashion, beauty, sports, music, food, and gaming, with additional accolades for collaboration, comedy, and cultural impact.
“These honors collectively showcase the profound ways creators initiate conversations, cultivate communities, and define contemporary culture on Snapchat,” Snapchat asserts in its official blog. “The Snappys underscores Snapchat’s unwavering dedication to recognizing creators not merely as users, but as accomplished artists, entertainers, and pivotal cultural leaders.”
Snapchat now joins other major social media platforms in establishing creator awards. Meta-owned Instagram launched its “Ring” award last October, acknowledging top creators globally. Winners received both a physical custom ring, designed by Grace Wales Bonner, and a digital golden ring displayed on their profiles.
In November, TikTok introduced its first U.S. awards show, the TikTok Awards. Similar to Snapchat's initiative, TikTok presented category-specific honors like “Creator of the Year,” “Video of the Year,” and “Muse of the Year.” Notably, TikTok has previously hosted similar award ceremonies in various international markets, including Germany, Mexico, and Korea.
Snapchat's awards structure closely mirrors TikTok's, featuring a traditional awards show format with live winner reveals. The event promises to unite creators, industry leaders, and notable guests. DJ Khaled is slated to receive Snapchat’s esteemed “Lifetime Achievement Award.”
By instituting these awards, Snapchat and its competitors strategically position themselves as significant entities within the entertainment industry, extending beyond their primary function as social media applications.
