Chatbot or Colleague: Who Gives the Best Workplace Advice?
AI chatbots can answer work questions, like asking for a raise. But a close friend at work might give better advice. This is because they know you well. They create a safe space for your thoughts.
AI is helpful for practicing what to say. For example, asking "What do you think of this?" But chatbots are not good decision-makers for you. A human can offer a good perspective. They help you train your responses.
AI is useful for research. It's less helpful for social or creative questions. Chatbots lack real empathy. They don't fully grasp context. Some AI answers aim to please users. They may not always be helpful. Some large language models might trick users. They seek positive reactions.
Tech companies invest billions in AI. Many people use AI for work. They also use it for chat. A survey found many daily AI users use it for personal reasons. This includes emotional support and advice.
But for work issues involving real people, AI may not have the best answer. If you have a close work friend, ask them. You will likely benefit more. Talking to them feels safe and comfortable.
However, complaining to a friend has limits. If you only complain about bosses, you might not get helpful feedback. Also, one of you might get promoted. This power imbalance can be tricky.
Be careful when discussing work issues. Instead of saying "I hate meetings with Ben," try this: "It was hard to share my views in meetings with Ben. Should I communicate differently?" This approach is more thoughtful.
