Kaiser Permanente states that AI does not make treatment decisions. However, employees worry these changes pave the way for more AI use in care. Licensed social workers are reportedly being removed from direct patient assessments. They are replaced by unlicensed staff using apps or scripts for patient evaluations, according to Digital Trends.
Will AI Really Replace Therapists?
Faye Wright, Director of Health Care Innovation at the American Psychological Association, believes AI cannot fully replace human therapy yet. Current AI tools often focus on administrative tasks. These include billing and updating health records. This gives specialists more time to focus on patients.
Dr. John Torous, a digital psychiatry specialist, notes that AI tools entering mental health are promising but not fully tested. He advises professionals to understand and monitor these tools. They should also object to any tool that might harm patients or treatment effectiveness.
Concerns About Using AI Tools
One striker, Katie Romer, questioned the true benefit of AI. She asked, "Will patients benefit from AI? Will workers benefit? Or is the only goal to cut costs and increase company profits?"
With companies like Microsoft Copilot Health and Perplexity Health entering the market, AI seems inevitable. The key question remains: will healthcare systems use AI to truly support patients or simply as a way to cut expenses?
