Meta AI Chatbot Joins Threads to Answer User Questions

Meta is bringing its AI chatbot, Meta AI, to its Threads app. This move aims to let Meta AI join conversations and reply to users. It follows a similar feature on the competing X platform, formerly Twitter.

The company is testing a new feature for Threads. This feature allows Meta AI to act like Grok, the chatbot on X. Meta AI can add extra context to posts. It will have its own official account on Threads, named "meta.ai@". Users can interact with it like any other chat.

This new feature is starting as an "early beta." It will first be available to users in Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Mexico, Argentina, and Singapore. This seems very similar to how Grok was first added to X.

Meta says users can ask questions like, "Why are people talking about the World Cup this month?". Meta AI can then answer publicly. Users can also ask Meta AI to reply to other posts. This is a common use of Grok on X.

Giving an AI chatbot a prominent role on Threads could bring challenges. On X, Grok became known for controversial statements. Meta has generally been more careful with its AI chatbot's safety features. Grok has been called a "rebellious" AI.

Still, it's fair to wonder if the Threads feature will face similar manipulation. Users on X sometimes tried to trick Grok into making mistakes. Meta warns that users can mute the new "meta.ai@" account. This will hide its replies under their posts.

The Threads test was announced along with other updates for Meta AI. Meta AI now uses the company's latest AI model, "Muse Spark."
