Microsoft is adding a new AI-powered feature to its OneDrive cloud storage service. This aims to solve a common daily problem for users: naming and organizing files.
Many users find themselves with dozens or hundreds of files named unclearly over time. Names like "Document1," "Final_v3," or "Scan_2026" make finding files later a difficult and time-consuming task.
New Feature: Copilot Suggested Rename
According to the Microsoft 365 roadmap, the company is launching a new feature called "Copilot Suggested Rename." It is expected to start rolling out in June 2026.
The feature uses AI technology to analyze file content. It suggests more accurate and descriptive names. These names reflect the file's nature and content instead of relying on general or random names. This was reported by "digitaltrends" and seen by "Al-Arabiya Business."
How Does the Feature Work?
The feature will be integrated directly into the file renaming window in OneDrive on the web. When a user chooses to rename a file, Copilot analyzes its content. It then displays three different suggestions for suitable names in the renaming window. Users can select one of these suggestions with a single click, without needing to type the name manually.
Suggestions will also appear immediately after uploading files to OneDrive. They show up in the pop-up window after the upload. This allows for renaming the file as soon as it's added to the cloud.
Support for Most Common File Types
The feature will not be limited to Office documents. It will support a wide range of formats used daily. These include: Word documents (DOCX), PowerPoint presentations (PPTX), Excel spreadsheets (XLSX), PDF files, Markdown files, and images. This support covers most file types users rely on for work, study, or personal use.
Available on the Web Initially
Current information indicates that Copilot Suggested Rename will initially be available for OneDrive users via the internet browser only. This applies to both personal and business accounts. Microsoft has not yet announced a release date for the feature in OneDrive apps on Windows or smartphones. However, support is expected to expand later if the feature proves successful with users.
A Small Problem... But Annoying
Naming files might seem simple. But it becomes a real problem as documents and files accumulate over time. That is why Microsoft is seeking to use AI for a daily organizational task that has long been ignored. It turns the renaming process from a repetitive manual task into an automatic action based on understanding the file's content. If the feature successfully provides accurate and meaningful suggestions, it could become one of the most useful AI additions for OneDrive users, especially those who handle large numbers of files daily.
