Instagram is ending its support for end-to-end encrypted direct messages. This change starts on May 8, 2026. It is a big shift for private chats on the app.
After this date, Meta might be able to read your Instagram messages. These messages were once private between you and the receiver.
A Meta spokesperson told The Guardian newspaper, "Very few people were using the end-to-end encryption option. So, we will remove this option from Instagram in the coming months." The newspaper reported this. "Anyone who wants to keep using encrypted messages can easily do so via WhatsApp," the spokesperson added.
Meta first offered end-to-end encryption for Instagram messages in 2023. But the company quietly updated its help pages in March. It confirmed the feature would be removed permanently.
Users whose chats will be affected are now getting in-app alerts. These alerts ask them to download messages or media before the deadline.
The company did not explain why users need to download encrypted chats before May 8. It also did not say what will happen to these chats after support ends. This lack of clarity was reported by The Mac Observer.
This mystery has caused worry. Instagram once promoted strong privacy on its apps. Now, it is removing encryption support for one of its biggest platforms.
Instagram's official help page explains end-to-end encryption. It says no one, "not even Meta itself," can read messages or hear calls. This is because each chat uses special security keys. These keys are stored on users' devices. But this protection will end for Instagram direct messages after May 8.
