Roblox Agrees to $12 Million Settlement Over Child Safety

Roblox, the popular game platform, has agreed to pay over $12 million and add new safety features. This is part of a settlement with the state of Nevada. The agreement comes amid many lawsuits. These lawsuits accuse the company of failing to protect children on its platform.

According to a press release from Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford, the deal ends a potential legal dispute. The dispute involved accusations that Roblox failed to provide enough protection for children playing on the platform.

Settlement Terms

Under this agreement, Roblox will spend $10 million over three years. This money will encourage children to engage in non-digital activities. Roblox will also add an age verification system for all users. This is according to a report from CNET, a tech news site.

This includes facial age estimation technology and government-issued ID cards. These will be used to confirm age. The system will also use behavior monitoring. This helps identify users who may have been mis-aged. This is according to the press release.

The Attorney General of Nevada stated that Roblox's agreement will give parents tools to protect their children on the platform. It will enable protective measures to stop abusers from contacting children. It also ensures messages with minors are not encrypted.

Additionally, Roblox has committed to spending $1 million over two years. This will fund an awareness campaign for minors and adults about online safety. Another $1.5 million will create a law enforcement liaison role. This person will work with state law enforcement agencies on platform concerns.

Roblox's Head of Safety, Matt Kaufman, said on Thursday that this is part of the company's effort. They aim to set a new standard for digital safety.

Kaufman added: "This decision sets a blueprint for how industry and regulators can work together. They can protect the next generation of digital citizens. There is no finish line when it comes to safety."

Roblox faces significant legal pressure with over 140 lawsuits. These lawsuits, filed starting in 2025, claim the company intentionally created a gaming platform. This platform allowed abusers to target minors.

The company also faces lawsuits from attorneys general in Texas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Iowa, Nebraska, Tennessee, and Florida. These lawsuits involve similar accusations.

Age-Based Accounts Coming Soon

Two days before the settlement was announced, Roblox CEO and founder David Baszucki revealed new accounts for younger users.

Roblox Kids accounts will be for children aged 5 to 8. Roblox Select accounts will be for ages 9 to 15.

Users over 16 will have a special classification called simply "Roblox".

Kids and Select accounts will be available for these age groups. This will be determined by Roblox's age verification technology or by a verified parent. This information comes from Roblox.

These new age-classified accounts will launch in early June.
